Amazon Catalog Sales Analysis

As a first step, we rely on the first rule of any investigation "Follow the Money."

After all, what could be more important to understanding a portfolio than understanding where its revenue is coming from?

The first step is to look at the overall sales of the account. Get a feeling for how long the account has been selling for. Take note if sales have been growing, shrinking, or staying the same year over year. For accounts with less than two years of sales history will be less useful to look at year over year (YoY) sales growth as a metric.

Once you have a good feeling for overall account sales, you can start slicing up the sales data by different dimensions to learn more about where sales are coming from. Go ahead and get the sales data for the last 30 days for products by:

  1. % of sales by product category

  2. % of sales by Products Introduced within last 6 months VS Products Introduced within 7-12 months VS 12+

  3. Highest to Lowest Selling Child ASINs

  4. Highest to Lowest Selling Parent ASINs

After these snapshot you will have a great foundation for all of the future decisions you make on the account. It is vitally important that you take the time to familiarize yourself with this information. Awareness of where the account's revenue is coming from will help guide all the decisions you make to growth the account going forward.
