Image Optimization

Images incredibly important to shoppers on Amazon. First the Hero Image (Image 1) is the first and most prominent thing that any customer sees when browsing to find your product. Secondary images much more likely to be scrolled through and 2x-5x more common for customers to read than even your bulletpoints.

Hero Image

Now with Amazon's strict guidelines to Hero Images, theres not always so much that you can do, so I'd like to list a checklist as well as some special tricks that maybe or may not be suitable for all products but if you can execute on them, they can help improve this vital part of your listing.

Checklist
  1. Colors of product match the actual product

  2. Color/Contrast of photography looks pleasing to the eye

  3. Photo is High Resolution and does not have any unsightly jpeg distortion

  4. Photo has a white background

  5. Photo is taken from an angle that accentuates key features' size and shape in a positive light

  6. If product has brand, brand is clearly visible on product/packaging in Hero Image

  7. If Packaging exists, is placed next to product

  8. If product is a multi-pack, place multiple of the product in the frame if less than 10, put clear pack size counter text on image if 10 or more.

Tips and Tricks
  1. If label of product is visible in Hero Image but illegible, changing the size/proportion of text on the label to make certain parts of the label easier for customers to read is absolutely accepted by Amazon's Image Policy and this trick should be used. The general rule is that is you are digitally altering labels of your products to make certain things more clear to the customer, then it is an acceptable practice.

  2. Placing the main keyword that your product is trying to rank for at the current moment can be a major benefit to ranking for that keyword. Think about it: Imagine you are searching for a "retractable dog leash," you scroll through and see a ton of different products that look like what you want. But when you scroll down to the product shown in the image below, you are 100% certain this product is for you.

This in turn increases the number of people clicking and buying for all customers who type in "retractable dog leash" into the Amazon Search bar. The algorithm then sees how well your product does on this keyword and boosts you in the organic rankings for the keyword!

Secondary Images

Secondary image, in comparison to Hero images offer far more freedom. The 4 images that every Amazon product needs on their secondary images:

Product In Use with Feature Callout Icons

Even if you can't super impose the product or shoot your models with the product in use. This image creates a strong emotional attachment in the customers mind that lets them know exactly who you are as a brand and who they can become if they buy your product. While the icons convey important "must know" information that enables the customer to buy.

Comparison Table

The comparison table gives you a clear chance to talk about the strengths (And potentially weaknesses of your product to build trust and credibility) while calling out general types of products that serve as substitutes or direct competitors to your without DIRECTLY calling out your competitors. This gives you the chance to compare your product in its best light to your competitors and make customer feel more confident in their buying decision.

Scale and Sizing

Help answer a basic question that every customer will have about your product which is "Is this the size I am imagining this is?" Go the visual route and show your product next to a common household object like a pencil, or an adult human outline to give a sense of scale. Or, take the route of the image below and just put a mini measuring tape on top of the product.

Usage Modes

Images that illustrate the different modes a product can be used in help to answer to the customer that the product is good for their indidvidual use case.

Brand Info (Bonus)

If you have a great brand story that your current customers care about, maybe customers on Amazon will care about it too! This can be an instant credibility builder and differentiates your products from the all too common fly by night offshore scams brands on Amazon. Only do this image if you have a great vision for it. If something doesn't come to mind immediately that will instantly communicate your brand's history and your story then this might not be appropriate for your product. If you do execute on this image, placing it as the last image before the video is a good choice.
